David Ayer, the American filmmaker behind the 2016 megahit Suicide Squad and this year’s action thriller The Beekeeper , knows a thing or two about living on the edge. Apparently, that applies to his taste in homes, too, as the 56-year-old just hoisted his modern residence that’s cleaved to a steep hillside in the Elysian Heights area of L.A.’s Echo Park neighborhood onto the market for $2.49 million.

The screenwriter behind other blockbusters such as The Fast and The Furious bought the five-bedroom house for $1.67 million in 2017, according to property records. Spanning three levels, the abode was built in 1902 with interiors that spread out over 3,315 square feet. Its most prominent features include high ceilings, hardwood floors, and designer light fixtures. But the abundance of outdoor spaces with leafy canyon views is what makes it special.

A wall of windows fills the main living area with verdant canyon views.

Its brown-and-beige façade isn’t the most appealing from the street, but step through the secured entry gates and into a lushly planted courtyard, and things begin to liven up. White walls trail the main living area alongside cool to neutral hues and wooden window trim that creates a sense of warmth and connection to nature. The abode’s open floor plan allows the living room, dining room, and kitchen to be seamlessly connected in an L-shaped space that features a three-sided fireplace alongside the modern, well-equipped kitchen.

Upstairs, the primary suite has a sitting area and a spa-like ensuite bathroom that features a steam shower and soaking tub. A walk-in closet is also part of the serene suite, alongside a spacious private patio enveloped in foliage. There’s one other bedroom on the upper level, while two others are tucked away on the lower level, along with a bathroom and a compact living/dining area, complete with a kitchenette.

A sports court is notched into the hillside below the house.

The rooftop deck is kitted out with a built-in BBQ and ample space for alfresco dining set-ups. The top-floor views are gob-smacking, but the landscaped grounds also offer a number of other alluring spaces as well. The front courtyard has a pergola-covered dining area, and elsewhere are a chicken coop, vegetable gardens, a sauna, a sports court, and numerous fruit trees.

Proximity to Dodger Stadium and downtown L.A. for events and shopping also makes the home a convenient catch. Juliette Hohnen of Douglas Elliman holds the listing.
