From the 1970s to the early 80s, the Mudd Club was one of New York City’s most popular underground clubs, famous for its unisex bathrooms, Keith Haring-curated fourth-floor gallery, and for drawing in a crush of icons from the downtown demimonde like Debbie Harry, Klaus Nomi, the B-52s, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, who brought along his then girlfriend Madonna.

The Mudd Club closed its doors in 1983, but its extravagant parties are still talked about today. And now, former patrons and fans of the legendary venue can take up residence right next door. Set in Tribeca, the duplex penthouse at 81 White Street , listed for $7.5 million with Lance Gillette and Mallory Bogard of Serhant, not only affords owners close proximity to the location of an important pop cultural touchstone but also the neighborhood’s variety of luxe shops and restaurants.

A massive skylight tops the fifth-floor residence, flooding its 3,202 square feet with natural light. Apart from its oversized living room with a gas fireplace and wet bar, there are a total of three bedrooms and an equal number of bathrooms, alongside a custom steel-and-wood staircase.

A 27-foot ceiling is capped by an enormous skylight over the entrance gallery, which includes the central staircase by Weng Steel Designs. Ebony-stained hardwood floors, tall windows, and a modern fireplace highlight the combination living and dining room. The chef’s kitchen, meanwhile, sits on the opposite end of the floor with custom Woodmere cabinets and upscale appliances like a six-burner Viking stove, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, and a Bosch dishwasher. The lower floor is completed by a spacious bedroom decked out as a home office and a nearby bathroom fitted with Roburn cabinets and Grohe fixtures.

Upstairs, there are two en suite bedrooms. A guest suite has a marble bathroom with a European steam shower, while the primary suite features two dressing rooms and a jetted tub surrounded in California river stone tile work. Both bedrooms have a full wall of glass that looks into the entrance gallery, and each has a large private terrace.

The penthouse crowns a boutique condominium that comprises a pair of 19th-century loft buildings with a total of 11 units. Set in the midst of Tribeca’s gallery scene, the penthouse is within walking distance of The Journal Gallery and 1969 Gallery, not to mention the Odeon , the still open and always en vogue eatery where Andy Warhol, Robert De Niro, Ben Affleck, and Katie Holmes are all known to have noshed a time or two.
