Swiss College Students Created an EV That Can Rocket From 0 to 62 MPH in Under One Second

That’s what happened to a McMurtry Spéirling . The electric fan car recently posted two different lap records at Laguna Seca—both with a “non-professional” driver behind the wheel. The Spéirling is now the fastest EV and production car in the track’s history.

The two marks were set during a demonstration event held during the Monterey Motorsports Reunion. The display ran for 10 minutes and featured two of the fan cars running together in public for the first time. One of the vehicles, a Spéirling Pure model driven by Philip Kadoorie, was able to circle the 2.238-mile track seven times, posting a best lap of 1:18.413 minutes.

That time makes the Spéirling the fastest EV in track history, besting a mark posted by the Porsche Taycan GT this March, as well as the fastest production car, beating a Czinger 21C that had owned the record for less than a week. If all that wasn’t impressive enough, the record was set while the EV’s running power and downforce were set at just 50 percent.

“The confidence I had with the fan assisted aero is one of the reasons we broke the EV record today without really trying,” Kadoorie, who races a Porsche 962 Group C car in historic competitions, said. “I’d love to return next year and try the more powerful fan and power settings next for the outright lap record.”

Of course, it’s no surprise to see the Spéirling break another record, something it’s been doing since making its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2021. The Batmobile-like EV has an ultra-lightweight carbon-fiber monocoque chassis—thanks to which it tips the scales at just 2,200 pounds—and a dual-motor powertrain that produces 1,000 hp. The real difference maker, though, is a set of two turbine fans that can create over 4,000 pounds of downforce, keeping the car glued to the tarmac as it rips around the track. It can rocket from zero to 60 mph in 1.55 seconds and has a top speed of 185 mph.
