This New Electric Drum Set Lets You Play in Near Silence

Roland has just unveiled the V-Drums Quiet Design kit , which, as the name suggests, lets you play the drums without as much of the noise. The fully electric is set for any musician, from beginners to season pros, who wants to play without bothering the people (or animals) they may live with morning, day, or night.

The Japan-based Roland, which has been producing electric instruments for more than a half-century now, has been making the V-Drum line since 1997, according to New Atlas. Some purists will disagree, though, at this point, these sets sound almost identical to an analog counterpart despite coming in a much more compact and convenient package. You can also, of course, play with headphones.

This does cut down on a lot of the noise associated with drumming, but, as anyone who lives with a drummer can tell you, not all of it. You may not hear the noise produced by the actual electric drums and cymbals, but you will hear all the noises associated with playing them, especially when pads are being struck and pedals are being pushed. This goes for Roland’s latest release, too, though the Quiet Design kit has been designed and engineered to produce less plugged-in play noise than any of its predecessors. Specifically, the brand claims, 75 percent less.

How’d Roland do it? The kit’s snares, toms, and cymbals all feature noise-absorbing inserts, mesh heads, and vents meant to reduce excess noise, or at least keep as much of it confined to your headphones as possible. The kick drum, usually one of a kit’s loudest pieces, has an eight-inch play surface that features a dense triple-layer cushion covered with a double-ply mesh. Even the kit bases are covered in hemispherical rubber feet to help isolate noise to each individual pad.

The Quiet Set also plays nice with other V-Drum products. Roland says it is compatible with previous V-Drums products, including the TD-07 control module . The full kit, which includes the module, costs $1,799.99, while a set of just the pads can be had for $1,599.99.
