An NBA Reporter Said Jayson Tatum’s $200,000 Richard Mille Looks Like a ‘Kids Watch’

Jayson Tatum copped some shade for his colorful watch choice over the weekend.

A reporter told the Boston Celtics power forward his Richard Mille looked like a “kid’s watch” at a post-match press conference in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

“I have to ask this, is that a real watch you’re wearing?” the journalist asked. “It looks like a kid’s watch or something.”

Tatum, who was sitting next to Celtics guard Derrick White, seemed taken aback by the question. He looked to his teammate before exclaiming, “That was crazy.”

Crazy, indeed. Tatum is only 26, but just signed a $315 million contract extension , so can easily afford a “real watch.” (He has previously been spotted wearing Audemars Piguets and Rolexes, in fact.) The RM 07-01 that was on his wrist is definitely not for children, either. Priced at $205,000, the luxury timepiece is part of the Colored Ceramics collection Richard Mille released in September 2023. The line comprises three highly complex and wonderfully quirky watches inspired by the Memphis Group. Founded by Ettore Sottsass in the 1980s, the Italian design and architecture collective created abstract, postmodern pieces that challenged the status quo. The wrist candy evokes that same disruptive spirit, combining playful ‘80s design codes with the latest horological innovations.

    The Coloured Ceramics collection.

The Swiss watchmaker’s signature tonneau-shaped case and skeletonized dial have been reimagined with pastel hues and geometric shapes. Crafted from hardwearing TZP (tetragonal zirconia polycrystal) ceramic, the 31.4 mm case comes in sky blue, cotton candy pink, or lavender. (Tatum opted for the latter.) The dials showcase an array of triangles, circles, rectangles, and half moons, with each shape featuring ceramic, rubber, diamonds, or guilloché decoration. To top it off, the calfskin straps are finished in an array of contrasting hues.

The inner workings are just as striking. All three pieces are powered by the in-house caliber CRMA2. The automatic winding movement, which can be seen through the sapphire caseback, has a variable-geometry rotor that can be adjusted to the wearer’s activity level and offers 50 hours of power reserve. A certain Celtics player will surely appreciate that.

The trio of RM 07-01s were labeled ladies’ models by Richard Mille, but can, of course, be worn by any gender. It’s more a matter of whether or not the wearer can pull off the small but punchy piece. We actually think it looks great on the wrist of a six-foot-eight gent like Tatum.

That’s an ugly watch no way that thing holds its value. Those straps look like they come in kid colors.

He should give the watch to Deuce. Whatever is special about the watch should not be available in yellow for adults! Not my $$$!!
