This $1.5 Million Penthouse Tops a 19th-Century D.C. Mansion Built by a U.S. President’s Son

Ulysses S. Grant, Jr., the son of 18th U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant, famously built a Victorian mansion in the district’s Logan Circle back in 1877. It was the first home on the circle and later opened to the public as the Letcher Art Center during the 1950s. One of its special units, Penthouse 7 , recently came to market for $1.49 million and has already accepted an offer in less than two weeks’ time. Margaret Babbington of Compass holds the listing.

The two-story abode at 1 Logan Circle came to be in 1998, after the building was sold and converted to condominiums. It is one of just eight luxury residences in the building and offers an open floor plan that includes two bedrooms and bathrooms, plus an oversized skylight and subtle design features like engraved door hinges that reflect its past.

A commemorative plaque greets visitors at the front door of the distinguished mansion, noting the 1998 conversion spearheaded by developer P.N. Hoffman. The penthouse’s central staircase sits next to the foyer, which leads into the main living area. Natural light floods the great room, where a TV is hung over the wood-burning fireplace, as well as the nearby kitchen and dining spaces. The former includes laminated white cabinetry and modern appliances, next to a quaint breakfast nook.

Both bedrooms are accessible on the entry level as well. The primary’s ensuite bath includes a tall glass mirror set beside dual sink space and wooden cabinetry that gives it a luxurious feel. The rooftop deck is accessible a floor above with excess room for alfresco dining and lounging, plus cabana-style seating. City and Logan Circle park views come with the sale, too, but its walking distance to subway stations makes getting around the district all the more convenient.
