    Porsche’s New 911 GT3 Is a Street-Legal Race Car—With Room for 4

    No modern Porsche 911 generation is complete without a GT, and the latest finally has one of its own.

    The German sportscar maker unveiled the 992.2 GT3 on Friday afternoon. The latest iteration of the model arrives 25 years to the week after making its debut and to mark the milestone two versions will be available at launch—a track-focused car and a more refined Touring Package version.

    Since debuting as part of the 996 generation in 1999, the GT3 has been the go-to high-performance model for 911 drivers craving a more hardcore driving experience.  That’s because the variant—as the name may have given away—is basically a street-legal version of the company’s GT3 race car, with the aggressive body kit, lightweight construction, and potent powertrain to match.

    As in past generations, the new GT3 looks like a bulked-up version of the standard 911 with a more exaggerated shape and a large fixed-wing coming off the back. The 992.2 iteration is no different, though it does feature some tweaks that differentiate it from its immediate predecessor. Both the front and rear ends have been revised with new Matrix Design LED headlights, redesigned diffusers, and larger air inlets to give the vehicle a more structural look. The Touring Package, which has been offered since 2017, sports a more streamlined look, forgoing the rear wing to give it a more sophisticated look. Despite these modifications, both models utilize lightweight materials, including carbon fiber, aluminum and magnesium, to keep the weight down.

    The interiors of the two GT3s vary little between one another and both feature lightweight carbon-fiber bucket seats that fold. The Touring Package also comes with an optional rear seat for the first time, something that the marque says customers have been requesting for years now. This version also has more premium material options, including colored leather upholstery.

    The new GT3 is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter boxer engine that pumps out 502 hp and 331 ft lbs of torque. That puts the mill in line with that of the outgoing car, a flat-six that made 500 hp and 339 ft lbs of torque. No performance figures have been announced yet, but the previous generation could sprint from zero to 60 mph in three seconds flat and reach 198 mph so it will be fast. Two gearbox options will be available for both models, a seven-speed PDK and a six-speed manual, both of which have a final drive ratio that’s eight percent shorter than before.

    The order books for both versions of the 992.2 GT3 will open at the end of the year, with deliveries expected to begin next summer. Pricing for the latest hardcore 911 will start at $222,500. Weissach and Lightweight packages are available for both models so drivers looking to customize their GT3 shouldn’t be surprised if that price begins to climb.
