After World War II ended, the Harvard Five , a handful of innovative alumni of the Harvard School of Design, decided New Canaan, Connecticut, was the perfect place to experiment with modern architectural designs, producing over 80 homes with unique flair. This residence in the historic town with shoe-making history, now listed for $9.18 million, employs completely different architectural styles, however, combining Colonial and Tudor elements with a modern sensibility.

The sprawling estate at 119 Proprietors Crossing was built in 2000 by architect James E. Gearity. On- and off-the-market again since 2019, the home sits on four park-like acres. Six bedrooms and ten bathrooms are spread across its 16,255 square feet of recently renovated living space, in addition to plush amenities that range from a great room with a bonkers 35.5-foot vaulted ceiling to a stone-walled wine grotto. There’s even a secret staircase that leads to the owner’s primary suite. Could it get any cooler? Ashlei De Souza of Serhant holds the listing.

The great room features colossal hand-carved buttresses.

From its courtyard, you get an idea of the two-story home’s massive scale. Its exterior balances Colonial-style pitched roofing and whitewashed shingling with prominent red brick chimneys and a stone-faced ground floor that mirrors a classic Tudor build.

Inside the stone-floored foyer, a grand spiral staircase sits beneath a dazzling Baccarat chandelier. Two of the home’s most impressive spaces, the great room and what is referred to in marketing materials as the Blue Room, sit nearby with the former housing palatial inlaid parquet and monumental hand-carved buttresses that arch over the cozy living area and kitchen. The Blue Room, meanwhile, features 12-foot ceilings and French doors that open out to the grounds, while an adjacent study has a secret staircase that leads to the primary suite. On the lower level are a stone-walled wine grotto and tasting lounge with a fireplace, as well as a home theater.

A circular glass window adds characteer to the entrance of the climatized wine grotto.

A cathedral ceiling with exposed wood beams hovers over the fireside primary bedroom on the upper floor. One of the suite’s most stylish features is its 800-square-foot, boutique-like closet with ample backlit shelf space lining the room beneath eye-catching woodwork. When owners get tired of playing dress up, the closet’s light-filled sitting area is the ideal spot to relax for a moment.

A stone terrace runs along the back of the house, overlooking a soccer-pitched-sized stretch of lawn and terraced gardens surrounded by mature specimen trees that ensure privacy from neighborhing homes. The listing notes the addition of a swimming pool and spa is in progress.
