Salon Halo in Robbinsdale is working with Project Fairy Godmothers to ensure high school students are able to have a complete prom experience this spring.

“We give away the full experience: We actually give the jewelry, the makeup, hair demos. ... This year we incorporated some colleges to come in with college information for the girls. ... Everything they’re gonna need, except for the ticket,” Founder Cassandra Marshall said.

Shoes, seamstresses, personal shoppers, and a red carpet photo opportunity will also be available.

This is the 10-year anniversary for Project Fairy Godmothers.

The only requirement is for students to register in advance and to bring proof of 2024 high school enrollment, such as a school ID card. Go to

bit.ly/49yFYDY to sign up for a time.

The Sun Post asked if Project Fairy Godmothers could help students who want to wear suits. Marshall said they wouldn’t throw away a donated suit. However, the nonprofit does not have much experience styling men’s formal wear.

“Our setup is set up for girls,” Marshall explained.

Marshall added that transgender or nonbinary students are welcome too.

Marshall said most people come from the metro, but there have been students arriving from as far away as Iowa.

The event will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, April 7 at Jimmy Lee Recreation Center, 270 Lexington Pkwy N., St. Paul.

Beauticians from Salon Halo will be doing demonstrations and sharing hair tips on April 6.

Volunteers are needed both to set up and staff the event. Sign up to volunteer at bit.ly/3uHqr5R.

    Project Prom

Although the partnership with Project Fairy Godmothers is new, collecting prom dresses is not new for the salon. For years, Salon Halo worked with Project Prom, run by Robbinsdale resident Jeni Asaba, which equipped prom-goers with dresses for 16 years.

When the Sun Post reached out to Project Prom, an automatic reply explained that Asaba has decided to focus her attention on Building for Bridget, which is a nonprofit that built and opened a school in Uganda, where Asaba’s husband is from.

“There just isn’t enough time to do it all,” reads the email.
