Gunshot victim found at Capitol Building

Early this morning, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers discovered a man on the west steps of the California State Capitol Building with a gunshot wound through his leg, according to police.

Both the Sacramento Police Department and the CHP are actively investigating near the Capitol Building and are currently searching for the crime scene, according to preliminary radio reports.

Preliminary information suggests that the location may be in the vicinity of Capitol Mall, between 3rd and 4th Streets.

Officer Cody Tapley told The Sacramento Bee that police responded to a report of a shooting near the Capitol Building shortly after 4 a.m. and found the victim two blocks away on the Capitol's west steps.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and transported the victim to a nearby hospital via ambulance whose condition appeared to be stable at the time of transportation, according to Public Safety News.

Although the victim is expected to survive, that has not been confirmed by authorities.

Police have yet to confirm whether they have a suspect they are looking for or if an arrest was made.

Police have not released any description of a suspect nor have they asked for the public near the scene to stay indoors.

All available details remain unofficial and subject to change as more information becomes available, Public Safety News reported.

An official information has yet to be released by the Sacramento Police Department.

It’s unclear if this will impact state legislators who just reached a deal on the state budget.
