According to a report from CBS News Texas, authorities in Texas have started an investigation following an incident where a 13-year-old pupil was attacked by grown-ups while on a school bus.

The person, whose identity is withheld for reasons related to her age, narrated that the aggression occurred shortly before the school bus departed from Dentons Bettye Meyers Middle School the previous week.

The teenager stated, that before the attack rumors were circulating that a new girl wanted to fight her. The girl said she had reported the threats to school officials before the assault.
She said if I didn't keep her name out of my mouth, then she was going to beat me up, the girl recalled to CBS News Texas.

A happening developed between two adolescent girls at the bus ramp. One of the teenagers alleged that the new student hit her pressing her to retaliate in self-defense.

The 13-year-old student said she later heard her assailant yell "Mom" as an adult joined in on the fight.

"I was wishing I had my Mama," the girl said. "Because nobody helped me."

The student said another adult woman joined the attack and put her in a "chokehold."

As reported by the teenager involved, the two women left the bus later, coincidentally also landing at her stop. Later, she was subjected to a second attack after stepping off the bus. The visual evidence captured in the video depicts the 13-year-old being physically assaulted while lying on the ground.

The girl's mother expressed her concern regarding the bus driver's lack of action.

Had he locked the door, called for help, or waited for the police to arrive? Those grown adults wouldn't have been able to get on a bus, assault my child, and they wouldn't been able to follow the bus and continue assaulting her," the mom said. "And then while she (a relative of the girl accused of attacking her on the bus) was out there fighting her, he's like, he just drove off.

Denton school administrators withheld from remarking on student disciplinary matters, citing privacy laws. However, they have ensured that the new student will not be continuing classes on campus.

This horrible video depicts unacceptable conduct Denton ISD never condones, including an adult unlawfully boarding a school bus. Per district policy, the driver should have immediately called dispatch and requested law enforcement. Drivers are not authorized to use their cell phones while on the bus to ensure safety. Police responded to this incident, and this is currently an ongoing, active investigation by the Denton Police Department centered around an adult unlawfully boarding the bus and injuring a child, the school said in a statement. Following this situation, transportation officials addressed the driver, reinforced procedures, and provided additional training," the statement added.

The 13-year-old victim said she was suspended for three days following the incident.

I feel like Denton ISD failed my child," her mother said. "I could be a parent planning funeral arrangements if they would have had a weapon and got on a bus with a knife or a gun."

A Denton police representative said an inquiry into the incident remains ongoing.

Lack of Empathy and Respect in Schools

Can empathy, or the ability to understand and share the feelings of another, be taught? We can never quite determine another person's experience, but should we still try?

It’s impossible to perfectly inhabit another person’s experience. The important question is the value of the effort, and whether it leaves us more separated.

Why Empathy Can Matter More than IQ. Focusing on emotional skills would reduce school violence and equip students for greater success in life.

Research has shown that empathy and respect are at least as important for long-term happiness and economic security as “hard” skills like reading and math.

In 2004, Illinois made history by being the pioneer state to introduce comprehensive standards encompassing social and emotional learning (SEL) from preschool through high school. This important initiative sparked a nationwide trend, leading to the widespread integration of anti-bullying workshops, classroom rules stressing empathy, as well as the prominent display of emotion-related vocabulary, and visual aids like "emoji meters" in educational institutions across the country.

    More on Empathy and Respect

Do you think empathy is important? What are the benefits of trying to understand someone else’s experience and point of view?

Most of us are surrounded by people like us, leading to an empathy deficit, and it’s at the root of many of our biggest problems. The New York Times guide “How to Be More Empathetic” defines empathy as “understanding how others feel and being compassionate toward them.”
