18-year-old woman killed by wanted suspect in Cleburne shooting

On Sunday, September 8, 2024, at about 1:01 pm, Cleburne Police Officers reacted to the area of the 500 block of Poindexter about a shooting. On route, they were informed a woman had been shot and brought to another place.

The authorities went to the second place where they saw 18-year-old Kaylee Lanay Merchant, of Cleburne, was shot.

Merchant was a passenger in a white SUV, police stated, that was involved in a confrontation at the first place in the 500 block of Poindexter. She was brought to the hospital where she later died.

Cleburne police identified the suspect as 20-year-old Giovanni Diaz. An arrest warrant has been issued for him in connection to the shooting, and the search for him continues.

Cleburne police think the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no danger to the public.
