Five of the Munn Family, in Borger, Texas, are Latest Arrested for Capitol Riots

Thomas and Dawn Munn, of Borger, Texas, and three of their children, Kristi, Joshua and Kayli have been arrested for their involvement in the January 6, Capitol riots. It's the largest ‘family group’ to be arrested to date for the attack on the Capitol.

All five are charged with four counts related to the siege, and each is a misdemeanor. Court records say members of the family have requested a court-appointed lawyer, but no information on their lawyers has yet been made available.

The father Thomas, Dawn, Kristi, and Kayli were booked into the Randall County Jail in Amarillo, Texas pending their initial court appearances on July 14, 2021. The son, Joshua was also arrested on the 12th of June in Melrose, Wisconsin, USA.

The arrests followed a tip-off from a relative of the fiancé of Kristi Munn, according to court documents, making this yet another example of friends or family alerting investigators about who was involved in the Capitol siege on January 6.

It’s an indicator of just how divisive the event was, sometimes splitting families and friends apart.

This isn't the first time a family has been involved, but the Munn family now holds the unenviable achievement of first place when it comes to arrests within a family. There have been a few other family arrests, husbands and wives, and notably a mother and her son, who were among the first to be charged with conspiracy.

Tom Munn, the father of the family, posted a message on Facebook in late December urging people to come to Washington.

“POTUS HAS REQUESTED YOUR ATTENDANCE WASHINGTON DC JANUARY 6TH 2021.” He captioned it, “Our President has only asked two things from us so far… #1 Vote #2 January 6, 2021.”

On January 2, 2021, he posted a photo on Facebook that included the words;

“MARCH ON CONGRESS JAN 6TH 7 AM at US Capitol.” He captioned it, “The time has come.”

Surveillance video captured images of the five family members entering the Capitol by climbing through a window that had been smashed out. Later video showed them exiting 52 minutes after, again by crawling through another broken window.

When interviewed by phone, the mother, Dawn Munn, denied to the FBI investigators that she had been inside the Capitol, but a Facebook post she made the following day, on the 7th of January, claimed otherwise.

“We were in the Capitol!” adding, “Just keep that bit of info on the DL for now.”

Her husband again posted to Facebook on the same day;

“Things were happening so fast… couldn’t take pics as we were moving… saw a Vietnam Vet laying on the ground, he couldn’t see, as he had been hit in the face with the tear gas… people were trying to help him and wash out his eyes… he kept pushing them away screaming, ‘I’m fine!… keep pushing forward!!!’ I will never forget it!”
