Is Covid Really Surging Again in Texas? This is What the Latest Figures Show
2021-07-19
If you spend much time watching the news you're no doubt aware that Republican news channels and social media feeds are quoting Texas as a glowing example of the safety of not wearing masks to combat the spread of Covid-19. They also promote vaccine hesitancy.
Watch the Democratic feeds however and you see a different picture emerging. Texas is depicted as a state on the verge of plunging back into yet another wave of Coivid-19 deaths as infection rates soar across the county. The alleged spike is blamed on the Delta variant, lack of masks, and vaccine hesitancy.
So who should we believe? Was going maskless and declining to be vaccinated the right move or has Texas irresponsibly exposed itself to another round of Covid lockdowns across the state. Let's examine the figures to see if we can conclusively put the matter to rest.
Cases and Deaths for All Texas Counties
In Texas, there were 3,637 newly reported COVID-19 cases and 30 newly reported COVID-19 deaths on Jul 18, 2021. How does that compare with figures from the last three months?
There is a definite, not insignificant, uptick in cases and deaths as can be seen from the two graphs above. Although the numbers are not yet dramatic, they are of concern and will need to be closely monitored over the next two weeks to see if the upward trend continues.
As far as the most affected counties within Texas, the following are showing the greatest increase in infection rates for the last seven days. We were unable to obtain hospitalization figures for each of the affected counties, the figures below merely reflect testing positive for Covid-19.
Statewide there are more than 2,400 hospitalized patients — the highest number since May 10. This is a telling statistic as testing may not be foolproof, but hospitalization figures reflect the actual impact of the virus on the population.
On Saturday, July 17, Tarrant County reported 966 new cases and one death.
The death reported Saturday is a Fort Worth man in his 40s who had an underlying health condition. Tarrant County has seen 3,607 confirmed deaths from covid-19 and a total of 266,698 cases.
On the same day, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported that 12,326,614 Texans are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Officials also reported 14,254,212 people that have received at least one dose.
Despite biased reporting from both sides of the media, there is definite evidence to support an increase in Covid-19 infections over the last two weeks. For most Texans, exercising more care, practicing responsible social distancing, and, yes, masking in public will help minimize risk and reverse the trend. Vaccination works and if you are in an at-risk category, please ensure you get vaccinated.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott had this to say in a recent statement on the subject of covid vaccines;
"Anybody who gets vaccinated, the chances of them getting COVID or facing serious consequences of COVID are extremely minimal, and from all the information that I've been provided, the people who are getting COVID are people who are not vaccinated," he said.
