COUNTY FAIRS CONTINUING THIS WEEKEND
(OBLONG) As the Richland County Fair winds down this weekend, the Crawford County Fair in Oblong gets underway this weekend. The 4-H Horse Show is at 5:00 later this evening followed by the Open Halter Western Youth Show tomorrow morning at 10:00 and the Queen and Little Miss Pageant Saturday night at 7:00. Then various animal shows on Sunday afternoon and the Barnyard Scramble at 7:00 Sunday night. The Whippoorwill Rodeo is Monday night and after plenty of more livestock judging on Tuesday, it’s the Truck Pull Tuesday night. The 4-H Master Showmanship is Wednesday at 3:00 and Go Kart Racing that night at 7:00. The Livestock Auction is Thursday at 1:00, then the Power Wheels Demo at 6:00 and the huge Demolition Derby Thursday night at 7:00, followed by the Fair’s grand finale Demo Derby next Friday night at 7:00. More layoffs at freight-related firms: 607 workers cut across 4 states
Layoffs continue across the commercial transportation and freight industry, according to a new round of worker reduction notices in Florida, Texas, Illinois and Wisconsin. It is the second round of layoffs since the beginning of July. Averitt Express, Bath & Body Works Logistics Services, ShipBob, and Henry Avocado Corp. announced a total of 218 layoffs earlier in the month.

A 36-year-old Illinois trucking company and brokerage ceased operations recently and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation. B.T. Trucking Inc. of Broadview, Illinois, doing business as Blue Thunder Trucking, and its three affiliated companies — B.T. Transportation Group Inc., JPL Transport Inc. and Rysoti Inc. — filed for Chapter 7 liquidation on July 19 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Sophie Bowers – Vandalia: Sophie has been known as an all-around athlete in the area for several years now and faced her biggest test this year showing resilience as she came back from a pair of surgeries on her knee and shoulder to stand out in two sports in 2023-2024. This winter, while wrestling boys Sophie compiled an 18-5 record on the season before putting on a dominant showing in the IHSA girls state tournament and rolled through her opponents to claim the state championship of the 125 pound weight class and the first IHSA girls wrestling title for Vandalia and will look for a second in the upcoming 2024-2025 season. Sophie then followed that her wrestling championship up by running in her first high school season as a junior and not even getting in meets until mid-April, made her name known as a top area sprinter. Sophie would place in the top 3 in the 100m Dash and the 400m Dash in each of her few times on the track in the regular season, running a personal best each meet before taking second in the 100m Dash at the Altamont 1A Girls Sectional to qualify for the IHSA 1A State Track Meet. Bowers ended up taking 22nd in the rainy preliminary round of the State Finals with a promise afterwards that she’d be back and better in her senior year.

City and Chamber Move Date of Final Cross Street Concert and Night Market
(Undated) – The City of Robinson and Robinson Chamber of Commerce have announced a date change for the final Cross Street Concert and Night Market. According to Robinson Chamber Executive Director, Lisa Schaefer, “Due to overwhelming excitement and to make the City of Robinson Carnival even more spectacular, we’re moving the last night market and concert originally scheduled for Saturday, August 3rd at Cross Street Station to Friday, August 16th at Robinson City Park.” Interested vendors should contact Lisa Schaefer at the Robinson Chamber of Commerce to register. Earlier this month the City of Robinson announced a Carnival was coming to town on August 15th, 16th, and 17th. The Shrine Club BBQ will also be held that weekend.
