Rochelle veteran creates remarkable patriotic display in his front yard

ROCHELLE, Ill. (WTVO) — 4 years ago, Rochelle veteran Leon Bozek and his family created a permanent display in their front yard to honor fellow veterans. The display gets some extra love on Memorial and Independence Day.

“It’s a remembrance of those who have gone before and what they’ve done for us to be where we can be today,” said Bozek.

Bozek served in the Marines and Army for almost 24 years.

“Today, just trying to help promote their appreciation to veterans. I mean, I made a tombstone there to represent my dad, a World War Two veteran,” said Bozek.

Bozek said he hopes paradegoers remember the sacrifices throughout the country’s history.

“If we don’t share the history with the younger generation, it’s going to be lost,” said Bozek. If anybody sure looks deep enough in the history, you’ll see why we go through hard times then Good times and hard times, because it keeps repeating itself.”

The display gets a mixed reception. Some people applauded the tribute while others are critical of the space, however, Bozek plans to keep adding on.

“A lot of people drive by they honk. there’s good and bad everywhere,” said Bozek. “The thing is, let’s promote the good. This is more for the people that come through so that they remember they’re not forgotten.”

Bozek said his expansion plans include a flower garden, a bench and a walkway to the display.
