Attorney and former Rochester Township board member Rachel Bohman is announcing her candidacy for Congress as a member of the DFL Party in Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District.

She aims to challenge current Rep. Brad Finstad, a Republican from New Ulm. Finstad was first elected to the CD1 seat during a special 2022 election, following the death of Rep. Jim Hagedorn who died that February. He was re-elected in the regular election that November. In both election, Finstad defeated Democrat Jeff Ettinger, of Austin, securing more than 50% of the vote in both runs.

According to a press release, Bohman’s campaign will focus on the crucial issues impacting people across Southern Minnesota, including the high cost of everyday necessities like gas and groceries, the rising cost and inaccessibility of healthcare, and the need for investment in local businesses to empower the vibrancy of main streets and towns across the district.

“I’m proud to be raising my family here in Southern Minnesota. We are so fortunate to have great schools, safe communities, and wonderful neighbors. I also recognize this moment presents unique challenges for those of us who call it home,” Bohman said on Tuesday. “I believe this district is ready for compassionate leadership that recognizes that the country works best when it works together. I am committed to bringing home results for everyone in Southern Minnesota.”

Bohman grew up in the district and is deeply in tune with the needs of Southern Minnesotans. She has a history of running and winning in moderate areas and bringing home real solutions for the issues deeply impacting those she represents. She lives in Rochester with her husband and two daughters.
