Shelley Duvall passed away on Thursday July 11th at her home in Blanco, Texas. The cause of death was complications from diabetes and news of her death was confirmed by her partner Dan Gilroy.

The Victor Farmington Library held its first readathon Thursday. Its goal: to spread a love for reading and for community members to view the library as a resource. The library staff was inspired by the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation Readathon that has been running for 12 years. That event has had success in growing the library’s community and attracting donations, which is what the Victor Farmington Library hopes to achieve.

This month, Highland Park on a balmy summer night will provide a pleasant atmosphere to go on an adventure with one of Shakespeare’s least-performed plays. The Rochester Community Players began its Shakespeare Program in 1994, and an annual summer “Shakespeare in the Park,” performed in the Highland Park Bowl, followed soon after, in 1997. “Pericles” will be the 26th summer production (there was none during the pandemic year of 2020), and RCP’s first production of the play. This won’t be its first performance in Rochester —the University of Rochester presented “Pericles” in the 1980s—but it will probably be most Rochesterians’ first encounter with this play.

So I’m sure I will surprise no one when I say it is not a super fun time to be Jewish right now. My child attends a small Jewish community day school in Brighton, NY, which recently held their annual scholarship dinner. Who should greet attendees on their way in, but a crowd of protestors. “F–k the Jews!” they called to parents, Rabbis, and community members on their way to support a small community day school. It’s hard to see how yelling obscenities at a day school scholarship dinner will positively influence events on the other side of the world, but of course they have a first amendment right to do so. There’s a lot that deserves to be said about the motivations of protestors who yell things like “Jews should be shot – I wish they would shoot you!” to community members in a parking lot, as these protestors did, but my purpose here is not to say it. Rather I wanted to focus on the practical impact for Jews of this kind of legal, but terrible behavior.
