ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The YMCA of Greater Rochester announced $1 million in funding from the state budget going towards lifeguard recruiting and training.

Since the pandemic, there has been a shortage of aquatic instructors. To keep the pools running all summer long, they need lifeguards.

“Our pools can’t operate without lifeguards,” Assemblymember Jen Lunsford said. “We need to ensure that we have adequate staff, because there’s so many people who use these pools, and rely on them for summer fun, so in order to offer as many swim classes as our families need, and keep our pools open, we need to have as many lifeguards as possible.”

Just last year YMCA’s across the state provided more than 150,000 swim lessons to children.
