ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) – Signs of warmth are growing for July, even as we are just a few days into the month. A favorable jet stream pattern is beginning to take shape that allows for warm air to work toward the Great Lakes and New England. This means a prolonged time period of above average temperatures, likely lasting through the month.

Do not expect big headlines with record afternoon highs. The forecast calls for a more nuanced heat that can sneak up on those that are not ready. Consistently above average numbers can cause health problems as our bodies struggle to regulate their internal temperature when exposed to prolonged heat.

What might be the most impacted by this warm pattern will be the overnight lows. While daily highs will have their variance, it is the overnight low temperature that will consistently run well into the 60s and lower 70s.

Halfway home, 2024 is Rochester’s warmest on record so far

Remember that climate change cannot be “blamed” for this warm forecast, but it likely plays a role. Consider it like a baseball player taking steroids. They might not get a hit every time, but when they do, it will go just a bit further than everyone else. Here is data on how heat waves have gotten worse over the decades.
