ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Rochester Police are investigating a reported abduction that led to a police chase and the successful recovery of two children.

It started just before 10 p.m. Saturday at the Dominos at 1699 Culver Road. A woman reported that she went in to order food and left her eight-year-old in the car along with an acquaintance and that person’s four-year-old child.

For some reason, the acquaintance drove off with the two children. The woman called 911. A short time later, the car was spotted on Route 104 by Webster Police and failed to pull over. Police pursued the vehicle before deploying spike strips and stopping it in the 3000 block of Palmyra Road.

The suspect was taken into custody and the children were recovered unharmed.

Deputies with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office arrested Yashira Cruz, age 40, of Rochester, for two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, two counts of Reckless Endangerment, one count of Unlawful fleeing from a Police Officer and 11 other traffic violations.

Deputies say the charges stem from a pursuit where it is alleged that Cruz refused to stop a vehicle she was operating after deputies had initiated emergency lights and sirens directing to her stop.

According to WCSO, Cruz led four police agencies through the town of Williamson on State Route 21, with two young children in the vehicle. Cruz was transported to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office for processing and then turned over to the Rochester Police Department after being released on appearance tickets.

Cruz will appear in Williamson Town Court on a later date to answer to the charges.
