A Rochester police officer came under fire during a traffic stop in Rochester on Thursday.

At approximately 3:10 p.m., an officer from the Rochester Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Unit was conducting a traffic stop near the intersection of Smith Street and Grape Street. While sitting inside his marked patrol vehicle with emergency lights on, a suspect discharged multiple rounds from a handgun, according to Rochester police. The suspect, positioned south of the officer on Grape Street, struck the patrol vehicle at least twice.

The officer was unharmed, but "shaken up," said Rochester Police Chief David Smith.

Responding officers established a perimeter in the area and apprehended a suspect, Smith said. A handgun was also recovered during the search.

No further information was immediately released.

    The investigation is ongoing.
