A man accused of shooting at a Rochester police officer during a traffic stop Thursday afternoon is facing numerous felony charges, according to police.

Here's what we know about the incident:

What happened when shots were fired?

The encounter occurred near Smith and Grape streets - roughly a block north of Jay Street - around 3:10 p.m. An officer with RPD's Traffic Enforcement Unit was sitting inside his marked patrol car, with emergency lights on, when a man fired multiple rounds from a handgun at the officer, said Capt. Greg Bello of the Rochester Police Department.

Ronald Adams, 20, of Rochester, is accused of approaching the patrol car from the west and firing at the vehicle.

Responding officers established a perimeter in the area and apprehended Adams in a nearby yard. A handgun was also recovered during the search.

    Was the officer hurt?

No. Multiple bullets struck the patrol car. The uniformed officer inside the car was not struck by a bullet, Bello said.

The officer was unharmed, but "shaken up," said Rochester Police Chief David Smith. Police have not released the name of the officer.

The Rochester Police Locust Club on Thursday released a statement about the encounter and said that "it is beyond shocking to have one of our members face such grave danger in broad daylight while carrying out their normal duties."

What charges is Ronald Adams facing?

Adams was charged with the following felonies: one count of attempted aggravated murder of a police officers, two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Adams is set to be arraigned on the charges at 9:30 a.m. Friday in City Court.

RPD's Major Crimes Unit will share additional details after the arraignment.
