ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The New York State Women of Distinction Award was presented to Daisy Rivera Algarin Friday.

She received the recognition due to her decades of work as a community servant bettering the Greater Rochester Area, and for her focus on empowering the Latina community.

Daisy Rivera Algarin is a co-founder and current board member of Latinas Unidas, which promotes leadership opportunities for Latinas in the Rochester area. She serves as director of Neighborhood Service Centers with the City of Rochester where she was instrumental in the city’s La Marketa project on North Clinton Avenue.

“I think about you know our purpose in life and what we were put on this earth for and I’m really proud to have had pioneers ahead of me like my dad and family members, grandmas who just for me, exhibited public service and having been able to see that and live it, I just didn’t realize how naturally it came to me to be able to just serve the community and I just get the biggest reward from doing that,” she said.

The New York State Women of Distinction award is presented every year to one woman in each state senate district. Daisy is a resident of the Town of Greece.
