ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Folks in Rochester came together Saturday to remember the legacy of a fellow community member who passed away.

Holding its second annual Health and Wellness Fair – the Helen Barrett Montgomery School number 50 honors Barbara “Punkin” Love-Garay, the mother of Principal Lakisha Taylor.

Punkin was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in June of 2022 and died a month and a half later.
The fair aims to educate and raise awareness about medical institutions and provide resources to improve the wellness of everyone in the community.

Family members said that Love-Garay had a fear of the health care system and they set up this fair as a way to give back.

“He Gives Beauty for Ashes is the theme for this week and we’re able to see just how God had blessed us with a new facility with a number of classrooms; a larger facility and more opportunity to bring people into understanding who God is,” Church Clerk and Communications Coordinator Angela Tucker said.
