Local group forms to support Kamala Harris

In the last week a lot has changed in politics. President Biden dropped out of the presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate. After his endorsement, VP Harris raised a record-breaking 81 million dollars in just 24 hours. Her campaign received donations from 888,000 donors on the first day, many of whom were first-time donors.

Unwavering support for VP Harris’ nomination has trickled to Rochester, with a Rochester for Harris group forming in less than 24 hours.

On July 22, local women organized a spontaneous support rally for Vice President Kamala Harris. “The rally grew out of our positive response to President Biden making the tough call. This is only a small beginning,” a press release stated. Around 45 people attended.

Connor O’Brien, a member of Rochester for Harris, said that she respects President Biden’s difficult decision to drop out of the race and is glad he gets to focus on running the country for the last six months of his presidency.

When it comes to a potential running mate, O’Brien said, “ I’m excited to see who she chooses, but I want the Senate to remain how it is.”

Amongst the supporters was 11-year-old Violette Rolle-Knox. “I am really excited because she is the first Black woman to run for president, and I have a really good feeling that she will be good,” she said.

Another supporter, Kendall Bell, said she's not afraid of racist or sexist rhetoric that may be used against Harris.

“I know it’s going to happen because all of us deal with it at different levels," Bell said. "But I think she’ll handle it with the grace that she handles everything else with and get through it.”
