In April 2022,  local musicians gathered over a pan of chocolate chip banana muffins to discuss the future of their careers. After sharing challenges and successes, the group received feedback from the community and was inspired to create a grassroots organization for musicians.

The Local Sound Collaborative was formed in 2022 to address issues musicians often face while trying to build a sustainable career. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many musicians struggled to maintain steady incomes in their music careers, and school art programs began to see disinvestment.

”How do we start to build music and reinforce music as a sustainable career path, and re-emphasizing the value that music can bring to our community,” Collaborative Director Ray Mahar asked.

In the first year of the collaborative’s opening, they hosted a fundraiser concert raising $14,000 to provide artists with resources.

Now, they share their passion for music through accessible programming, artist visits, and individual lessons. Designed for kids ages 2-6, the Music Makers program allows children to explore what they can do with music through song, dance, and instrument practices.

To make music more accessible and affordable, the collaborative uses a sliding scale model when accepting payments, meaning families can pay what they can afford for their programs and lessons.

Most recently, the collaborative was one of ten winners of the regional Springboard rapid prize competition. With a $7,500 grant, the collaborative plans to allocate the funds to its new Artist Grant Program (AGP).

Based on a Universal Basic Income (UBI) model, the AGP is a guaranteed income program to assist independent musicians. Those with a financial need will receive 12 monthly payments of $200 to spend on groceries, bills, and musical equipment.

To qualify for the program, musicians must be 18+ years old, live in the Rochester area, and actively participate in the local music community. Visit thelocalsoundcollaborative.org/artists to learn more.
