ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Harmful algal blooms (HABs) or blue-green algae have been spotted across New York State, including parts of the Rochester region. In response to this, The New York State Department of Health has closed several beaches.

Kershaw Beach closed due to harmful algae bloom

Ontario County Public Health officials emphasized Tuesday the importance of respecting these closures and thinking twice before jumping into a body of water. According to officials, toxins released can hurt humans and pets.

Kate Ott, the Director of Public Health in Ontario County said if you come across these blooms, you should rinse your skin and eyes with clear water, not lake water even if it’s boiled before-hand. Ott said boiling the water will not remove the toxins, and using lake water could increase your risk of inhaling those toxins.

If you’ve been exposed to these blooms and you start to notice any skin or respiratory irritation, develop a headache, feel nausea or begin throwing up – Ott said it’s best to seek help from a healthcare provider as soon as possible.
