Polls open for state primaries, local general election
Voters can now head to the polls to vote for several state and federal primary races as well as the county's general election. Polling locations are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, and voters are required to go to their designated locations. Voters in Davidson County's District 18 and who are assigned to Precinct 3, which was previously the Belmont Sport Science Center, will now need to vote at the Belmont Curb Event Center. Member of 'Tennessee Three' hopes to survive state Democratic primary for Senate seat
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee’s primary election Thursday will decide whether state Rep. Gloria Johnson, who shot to national fame after surviving a Republican-led expulsion effort for her participation in a gun control protest, will become the Democratic nominee in a fall matchup for the seat held by Republican U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn, who must first clear her own primary contest.
In Tennessee, it’s a felony to camp on public land. This 87-year-old wanted to protest the law — and was arrested.
Earlier this summer, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that cities can ban people from sleeping or camping in public places. In Tennessee, sleeping in those places was already criminalized by a 2020 law that made it a felony to camp on most state-owned property. And, in 2022, legislators expanded that law to make it illegal to camp on all public property unless otherwise specified. What is now a class E felony comes with a penalty of up to six years in prison and a $3,000 fine.
