13,600-Year-Old Mastodon Skull Found in Iowa Creek
(Des Moines) A 13-thousand-year-old mastodon skull has been found in an Iowa creek. Iowa’s Office of the State Archaeologist said in a social media post that they found the well-preserved skull on the side of a creek bed in Wayne County Wednesday at an excavation site they had been mining for the last 12 days.

(KMAland) -- KMAland residents can learn more about the crossover between mental health treatment and law enforcement in Iowa this week. That's because Author and Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson is appearing at multiple southwest Iowa libraries this week, discussing his new book, "Anyplace But Here: The Uncomfortable Convergence Between Mental Illness and the Criminal Justice System." Thompson will be at the Red Oak and Clarinda libraries on Wednesday and at the Tabor and Shenandoah libraries on Thursday. Thompson says his inspiration for the book came from his frustration with the state's mental health treatment program and the hope to reform it.

Women Managing Farmland Forum Scheduled in Storm Lake
A “Women Managing Farmland Forum” will be offered in Storm Lake next month. The event will be held on Friday, September 6th from 10am to 3:30pm at King’s Pointe Resort. The forum provides a valuable opportunity to refresh conservation, leasing, and estate management skills while networking with other women in agriculture. Topics will include erosion, soil fertility and water management, land owner responsibilities and economics of farmland, as well as trusts, taxes, and transition planning. The forum is designed to help attendees meet their long-term farmland management goals. By combining strategies, women can design equitable farmland leasing, adoption of conservation practices, and efficiency in transitions to next-generation farmers.
