ROCK HILL, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Neighbors in Rock Hill are grieving the death of 15-year-old Marlie Sullivan, who was killed while riding a golf cart that was hit by a car Thursday night.

Rock Hill Police say they’re narrowing down to a very specific part of their investigation. Investigators say the driver of a Honda was going in the wrong lane on Laurel Creek Drive when the car crashed into the golf cart.

Rebecca Howe had no idea that she’d encounter a lot of debris while walking her dog in her neighborhood, Laurel Creek, on Friday afternoon.

    “Awful, heartbreaking, horrifying,” said Howe.

Investigators are still trying to piece together the horrific crash that killed Sullivan, a Rock Hill High School student, who would have been a sophomore when school started next month.

“Obviously for her parents, her family, her neighborhood just to think that that could happen here, it’s terrible, terrible,” said Howe.

Police say six people, including Sullivan, were inside a golf cart just after 10 p.m. Thursday night.

Right at the curve of the road, police say a car crossed over into the wrong lane of traffic, crashing into the golf cart, flipping it over. Sullivan died on impact.

“Anytime you’re talking about a 15-year-old and untimely passing yes, it’s very tragic, you know it’s summertime, you got kids yourself, you want kids to be out enjoying the summer,” said Lt. Michael Chavis with the Rock Hill Police Department. “To have something like this happen, it’s going to be very impactful for everybody who knew this young lady.”

Three other golf cart riders were rushed to the hospital. Police say their injuries are not life-threatening.

The death of Sullivan hangs heavy over the neighborhood.

“Deep grief, the ripple effects for her friends, her family, for other students,” said Howe. “We’ll be praying for them to have comfort in such a difficult time.”

Police say the driver of the Honda stayed on scene and it’s too early in the investigation to say if there will be charges.
