The Genesius Guild is ending the 2024 season with a modern take on the comedy Plutus. Performances will be on July 20, 21, 27 and 28 at 7 p.m. at the Don Wooten Stage in Lincoln Park, 11 th Avenue and 38 th Street in Rock Island. Admission is free.

Plutus continues the Guild’s tradition of performing lighthearted rewritten Greek comedies to end the season. This year’s script was updated by T Green and Calvin Vo, the pair responsible for the Quad Cities’ Haus of Ruckus, working from Don Wooten’s reimagining of Aristophanes’ 2,400 year old script.

The plot still follows an old man (Chremylos) and his servant (Cario) as they meet a blind beggar. They soon learn that the beggar is actually the Greek god of wealth, Plutus. Plutus wants to regain his eyesight so he can ensure that wealth is given only to the worthy. Plutus, Chremylos and Cario navigate the ensuing chaos throughout the show.

The Genesius Guild is a community theatre organization founded in 1956 that specializes in free classical drama. The group performs Greek drama, Greek comedy, Shakespeare and other classical authors for eight weekends each summer. Click here for more information on the Guild.
