The remains of more than 500 Native Americans at a local museum have yet to be made available for return to their tribes. Now's the time for New Mexicans to freeze their credit files
Credit and home buying go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Of late, hackers and identity thieves have left a bad taste in the mouths of many prospective homebuyers. A perfect example was the hacking a few years ago of consumer data from credit files maintained by Equifax, one of our nation’s three major credit bureaus. In addition to stealing the names, addresses, birthdates and social security numbers of 143 million consumers, the identity thieves also pilfered some driver’s license and passport information. Last October hackers pilfered the records of the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department, stealing the personal information of thousands of New Mexicans. And, just last week, AT&T announced “that the call records for nearly all of its customers had been stolen by an attacker. This is an enormous breach, potentially affecting not just AT&T customers but also anyone who has called or texted someone on AT&T’s network”.
