Climb Aboard the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum with Kids
All Aboard! We took our three-year-old to A Day Out with Thomas event at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM), and she loved it! The TVRM in Chattanooga is about a 2-hour drive from Huntsville and is well worth it! The highlight of the event was a beautiful scenic 25-minute ride with the talking Thomas the Tank Engine. The train ride is just one of several activities at the Thomas event. There are photo opportunities with Sir Topham Hatt, an activity zone with train sets, live magic shows and various Thomas & Friends themed activities such as mini-golf, inflatables, and yard games (think ring toss, hopscotch, bubble machines). For all of those little ones (up to about the age of 8) who love trains, this is a must!

Recharge While the Kids Play at Sharon Johnston Park
Right outside of Huntsville, tucked away in New Market, you’ll find a hidden treasure just a couple of miles off the main road. As a little girl and a New Market native, many of my childhood days were spent playing at Sharon Johnston Park – visiting the playground, feeding the geese, riding bikes, fishing and walking the trails.
Wild Alabama encourages kids to go Wild on Wednesdays!
One of the things my family treasures most about living in the Tennessee Valley is having easy access to natural spaces. Whether it’s a city greenway, Monte Sano State Park, or one of North Alabama Land Trust’s numerous properties, we are never far from spots to walk a trail, splash in a creek, or just poke around in the woods. Sometimes we like to go a little farther from home and spend a day in one of Alabama’s wilder areas. For last week’s adventure, we joined other families for an excursion led by Wild Alabama. Their Wild Wednesday program offers great summertime fun off the beaten path!

MOMS Find Hope & Community in Local Postpartum Support Group
Diapers are overflowing from the bin, there’s either spit up or this morning’s breakfast on your shirt, the counter is brimming with bottles or sippy cups, and you spend most of your day speaking to a tiny human that can’t respond. Now imagine that there’s a place where you can step away from all of this for an hour to enjoy conversations with a licensed professional counselor, experienced mother-baby nurse, and other moms in the same position. Imagine no more! The Huntsville Hospital Mothers Offering Mothers Support (MOMS) group is just what you need!

Exploring the Beauty and Richness of Helen, GA with Kids
Incorporated in 1913, Helen began as a logging town in the Appalachian Mountains in northwest Georgia and was on the periphery of the Georgia gold rush. Once the wealth from the natural resources declined, Helen reinvented itself as a tourist destination, transforming into the Bavarian themed village you see today. Strict zoning requirements preserve this classic alpine look (even the downtown Wendy’s and Huddle House are not immune). While on our trip we enjoyed various activities, shopping and dining in Downtown Helen, while also taking a short drive to soak in the beauty of Anna Ruby Falls.
Seven Summer Reads We’re Excited About
Did you know that summer reading is a phenomenon? It is. Ever since I discovered Anne Bogel of Modern Mrs. Darcy and her annual Summer Reading Guide (this year’s edition releases on May 18th), I have looked forward with great anticipation to all the books releasing in the summer. Lady Smith, owner of Snail on the Wall, Huntsville’s local independent bookstore, and sponsor of the Rocket City Mom Virtual Book Club has had her eye on some summer titles also. Here are the summer reads we’re excited about.
