    Carly LaMay, Bre'Naziah Davis named to all-tourney team for Rock Valley College

    ROCKFORD — Hononegah graduate Carly LaMay and Beloit Memorial grad Bre’Nazjah Davis landed on the All-Tournament Team as the Rock Valley College women’s basketball team captured the NJCAA D-II Region 4 and Midwest District B championship on Saturday.

    The Golden Eagles, the No. 3 ranked team in NJCAA DII, knocked off No. 6 Oakton 84-79.

    RVC trailed 13-9 early on, but rallied to tie the game at 24-24 before a three-point play by Oakton’s Ellie Reynolds gave the Owls a 27-24 lead at the end of the first quarter.

    Oakton led by as much as 10 points in the second quarter before taking a 46-41 lead into the break.

    The Golden Eagles used a 16-6 run to go in front and led 64-59 heading to the fourth quarter. They never trailed after that. Mia Moore led RVC with 24 points. LaMay finished with 10 points, two assists and two blocks. Moore was named the Tournament MVP while LaMay, Davis and Maya Mitchell earned All-Tournament honors.

    Davis came off the bench to score 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting in an 87-48 rout of Black Hawk on March 2 in the regional tournament. In the Golden Eagles’ regional opener, Elli Teubert (Clinton) had 16 points in a 94-68 romp over McHenry.

    For the season, Teubert is averaging 9.4 points per game on 48 percent shooting from the field and 88 percent from the free-throw line. She also is averaging 2.8 assists. LaMay is averaging 3.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists for the Golden Eagles, who are averaging 90.1 points. Davis is averaging 6.9 points and 4.7 rebounds.

    Tuesday afternoon, the 33-0 Golden Eagles learned that they had been awarded the No. 3 seed for the NJCAA D-II national tournament in Joplin, Missouri. RVC has a first-round bye and will start tournament play in Joplin on Tuesday, facing the winner of Monday’s game between #14 seed Mid Michigan and #19 Bryant & Stratton of Virginia.

    This is RVC’s second year competing at the D-II level and first time in the D-II national tournament. At the D-III level, the Golden Eagles won four national titles and were runner up twice.

    • TOP FRESHMAN: Jayden Nortier (Clinton) had an outstanding freshman season at Edgewood College and was named Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Freshman of the Year. She was named First Team All-NACC.

    Nortier was second on the Eagles with 12.6 points per game. She shot 44.6 percent from the floor and pulled down 3.7 rebounds per contest. She dished out 56 assists and recorded her first career double-double against North Central.

    The freshman recorded double-digit scoring in 13 of the Eagles’ 16 games against conference opponents. The Eagles finished 13-3 in conference play and 15-12 overall.
