ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – It’s no secret on the Fourth of July that fireworks can be dangerous and that first responders give the public ample warning about staying safe while using them.

But a Rockford-area nurse says local medical professionals often see serious injuries caused by fireworks when people aren’t careful.

“This could be your last day with 10 fingers—eight fingers and two thumbs,” said nurse Coffey Wright.

Wright says most of the injuries she’s seen in her 15-year career have been burns, some of them very serious. She said the stateline medical community is also busy every Independence Day treating things much worse.

“People with hands blown off—injuries to the eyes can be very critical,” she said. “You can lose eyesight.”

Wright said minor injuries can be caused by sparklers and smoke bombs. However, things like firecrackers and professional-grade shells that residents often possess illegally, can make for challenging situations for doctors.

“Sometimes they’re able to reconstruct and save a body part,” she said. “But sometimes they’re not able to and you could lose a limb.”

Echoing area police, Wright says letting professionals handle explosives is the best way to stay safe.

“If there’s any way to enjoy this wonderful holiday without interacting with fireworks, fire and explosions, then I would say avoid it.
