Rockford's Keith Creek corridor and other parts of the city experienced flash flooding during heavy rains late Saturday and early Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service four to seven inches of rain fell over the area causing widespread flooding across the region including areas in Rockford, Belvidere, Loves Park, Machesney Park, Marengo, Cherry Valley, Winnebago, Davis Junction, New Milford, Garden Prairie and Seward.

Several roads were impassable due to flood waters, and businesses and homes in those areas also experienced flood to vehicles and basements.

Most roadways were back open by 11 a.m. Sunday, according to the city's Facebook page.

The Rockford Fire Department responded to 120 calls for service from 11 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday.

Emergency personnel rescued people who were trapped in flooded and stalled vehicles, conducted welfare checks on citizens who were trapped by rapidly rising floodwaters, put out a garage fire and addressed a structural collapse,

"Our dedicated teams worked tirelessly, prioritizing calls based on the urgency of each situation," the fire department posted on social media. "A large portion of the flooding occurred in the Keith Creek corridor, but localized flooding was reported across all areas within the city’s boundaries.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the remainder of the week, a flood watch is in effect for the Rockford area through 7 p.m. Sunday and a flood watch warning has been issued for 3:03 p.m. Sunday through 4 a.m. Monday.

"Another round of strong to severe thunderstorms will move across the area late this afternoon through the evening," according to the National Weather Service. " Damaging winds are expected to be the primary severe hazard, though large hail and tornadoes will also be possible. Torrential downpours may produce flash flooding."

More storms are expected later this week along with dangerously high temperatures.

The weather service warned that more flooding could occur Sunday evening with additional rainfall.
