ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – It’s wise to have an alternative source of electricity like a generator during a power outage because it doesn’t take long for refrigerated food to spoil, says the United States Department of Agriculture.

The USDA says when a generator isn’t available during an outage, it is wise to keep the fridge and freezer doors closed as much as possible because food will begin to go bad in about four hours.

After four hours, refrigerated perishables like meat, poultry, fish, and eggs—along with any leftovers—should be thrown out if power has not been restored.

“After a power outage, never taste food to determine its safety,” Foodsafety.gov says on its website. “You will have to evaluate each item separately…When in Doubt, Throw it Out!”

According to experts, some foods may be kept beyond four hours. Here’s a list of some of them.

    • Fresh fruits, uncut
    • Fruit juices, opened
    • Canned fruits, opened
    • Dried fruits, raisins, candied fruits, dates
    • Grated Parmesan, Romano, or combination (in can or jar)
    • Butter, margarine
    • Peanut butter
    • Jelly, relish, taco sauce, mustard, catsup, olives, pickles
    • Worcestershire, soy, barbecue, hoisin sauces
    • Opened vinegar-based dressings
    • Bread, rolls, cakes, muffins, quick breads, tortillas
    • Breakfast foods: waffles, pancakes, bagels
    • Fruit pies
    • Fresh vegetables, uncut
    • Fresh mushrooms, herbs, spices
