Man charged in July 4th shooting at Rockford Ridge that injured 4

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police arrested Augustus Young Jr., 21, for two counts of attempted murder among other charges.

On July 5, around 2 a.m., police responded to the 200 block of Cameron Avenue for a shots fired call. Officials said they heard over 50 gunshots.

Authorities found a black Ford Fusion disabled at the apartment complex’s entrance with multiple bullet holes in the vehicle and a man injured on the ground, according to court records.

There were three other victims of gunfire. All of the victims were transported to local hospitals.

Police said there were several different types of shell casings in the area. Several vehicles and an apartment in the 300 block of Cameron Avenue were struck with gunfire.

Officials watched surveillance footage from multiple angles and saw Young Jr. with a large handgun or AR-style pistol arriving in a GMC SUV, according to court documents.

Authorities said they could hear multiple gunshots being fired in the video. The suspect was seen jogging back into the frame with his pistol and a single muzzle flash can be seen at one point, according to police.

Around 1 p.m. that same day, detectives spoke to the male victim and he told them he was at a party the night before when he saw three different people shooting in his direction. He went on to tell detectives a bullet hit him, he was able to get to his car and speed off.

He described the shooter as tall, heavy-set, dark-skinned and in his early 20’s. He told officials the shooting happened near the far west side of the property, also where Young Jr. is seen shooting in the video.

Intel officers located a social media post that pictures the suspect wearing the same clothes that he had on during the shooting, according to court records.

Young Jr. is being charged with aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm, felon possession of a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and two counts of attempted murder.
