ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Local golfer Marcus Smith Junior had himself a week at the Illinois Men’s State Amateur Golf Tournament. He finished in second place at Akins Golf Club at the University of Illinois Urbana.

Smith came so close to winning it. He shot a sizzling final round of 65 Thursday, the best round any golfer at the tournament. That put him in a three-hole playoff agianst Pierce Grieve of Lake Forest. Both men were sitting a 9-under-par.

Smith grabbed the lead on the first playoff hole with a birdie, but he double-bogeyed the next two holes while Grieve had a par of pars.

Smith Jr. is a Winnebago graduate who was an IHSA state champion his junior year. He currently is a senior golfer at Howard University.

Two other local golfers competed in the State Amateur, TJ Baker and Jake Guse. They both missed the cut.
