ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Both the Illinois and Federal Emergency Management Agencies are going door-to-door in Rockford and Winnebago County this week to assess storm and flood damage.

The preliminary assessment is needed to gather information to see if the State should request a FEMA disaster declaration, which could mean more financial assistance for residents affected by the recent storms.

“A disaster declaration could mean a couple of different things. It could mean a small loan to help people kind of step back up after a disaster. It could also mean a little extra funding and support to help rebuild their houses,” said Illinois Emergency Management Association public information officer Kevin Sur. “On top of that, too, there are other programs that are available to some of the different communities, as well as individuals, to help out after a disaster.”

Door-to-door assessments are expected to continue for the rest of the week, throughout the state.
