How much do you know about the history of Hispanic and Latino culture and community in Rockford?

In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Rockford Register Star has partnered with La Onda, a newly-formed nonprofit organization, to help share and celebrate the impact of Hispanic and Latino people, businesses and organizations in and around the Rockford area.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Visit rrstar.com or the Rockford Register Star newspaper each day to read about the people and places that make up Rockford's Latino community.

Jose Luis and Vicky Zamora’s extraordinary dedication and passion for soccer have significantly shaped the Rockford community. What began as a personal passion for the sport has evolved into a lifelong mission to share their love of soccer with others.

In the late 1980s, they took over the Rockford Hispanic Men’s Soccer League, a league that Jose Luis had been involved with since its inception. Their commitment to soccer eventually transformed this league into a flourishing family business.

The Zamoras now run the International Soccer League of Rockford, the largest recreational soccer league in the area. This league offers divisions for players of all ages and skill levels, providing opportunities for kids as young as five to adults.

The league has become a cornerstone of the Rockford community, fostering relationships and nurturing a love for the game across generations. The inclusive environment ensures that everyone, regardless of age or skill level, has a place to play and enjoy soccer.

The Zamoras also own Rockford Soccer, a local soccer store that has been a staple in the community for over 15 years. The store not only provides equipment and apparel but also serves as a hub for the local soccer community. Through their store and leagues, the Zamoras have created a thriving soccer culture in Rockford, Illinois.

Games are played all day on Saturdays and Sundays at the ISC soccer fields located on East Riverside Boulevard and North Main Street. League updates and weekly pictures are regularly posted on their Facebook, Instagram, and website, inter-soccer.com , keeping the community engaged and informed.

For those interested in playing or forming a team for the winter session, the Rockford Soccer store is the point of contact. You can call the store at 815-394-7474.

The Zamoras' commitment to soccer has not only enriched their lives but has also had a lasting impact on the Rockford community, creating a legacy of sportsmanship, community spirit and a shared love for the beautiful game.
