Knoxville Announces July 4th Closures and Travel Advisories Ahead of Independence Day Festivities
As the United States gears up to celebrate its day of independence, Knoxville residents are being reminded to plan their travels carefully around the city closures announced for July 4. According to a release from the City of Knoxville, city offices will shutter their doors in observance of the holiday. Commuters are advised that both the Gay Street Bridge and Henley Bridge will also be closed on this day, potentially congesting detour routes.

Josiah-Jordan James signs with Indiana
Former Tennessee men’s basketball player Josiah-Jordan James signed a contract with Indiana. James signed an Exhibit 10 contract and will play for Indiana in the NBA Summer League. An Exhibit 10 contract is a one-year minimum salary contract and invitation to the Pacers’ practice and a try-out. Indiana will control James’ contractual rights. The team has the right to turn the deal into a G-League contract or a two-way contract. James averaged 8.4 assists and 6.4 rebounds per game during his final year with the Vols. He totaled nine points and nine rebounds in Tennessee’s win against Texas in the NCAA Tournament second-round. He recorded 15 points, four rebounds and two assists in the Vols’ win over Creighton in the Sweet 16. James was the first 5-star player to be signed by head coach Rick Barnes.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Haslam College of Business has been recognized again for excellence in supply chain management education. Gartner’s 2024 Top 25 Supply Chain University rankings place UT at No. 1 in North America for graduate supply chain management programs and No. 2 in North America for undergraduate programs.

Bolivar Grad Wins Fulbright Award
Steve Mahometano of Bolivar is one of eleven UT-Knoxville students who have been offered Fulbright scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year. Four students were named alternates. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is one of the most prestigious international exchange programs in the world. Established in 1946, it offers opportunities to passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students and young professionals in partnership with more than 140 countries worldwide. The program provides awards to about 8,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists and professionals each year, giving them the opportunity to expand their perspectives through academic and professional advancement and cross-cultural dialogue. As they carry out their grant-funded work, students work with, live with and learn from the people of their assigned host country. Mahometano graduated in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in honors neuroscience and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. He will be traveling to Taiwan to work as an English teaching assistant. “As a first-generation immigrant from Manila, Philippines, I am grateful to have benefited from language-cultural programs such as the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program before immigrating to the U.S. as a child,” said Mahometano. “I am pursuing the Taiwan ETA Program because it furthers my goal of refining my interdisciplinary and multicultural competencies and because I want to engage with neuroscience, psychology and medicine in a global context.”
