Heat advisory extended, air quality unhealthy for sensitive groups

The National Weather Service has extended a heat advisory for parts of the Hudson Valley until 8 p.m., with heat and humidity combining to make outdoor temperatures feel over 100 degrees. Air quality is rated as unhealthy for sensitive groups, including young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions. Those in these vulnerable groups should remain indoors in air-conditioned spaces and limit physical activity, according to the advisory. What is dew point and what is its impact? For everyone else, staying hydrated is crucial. Avoid strenuous outdoor activities if possible and take breaks if working outdoors. While beaches and pools offer temporary relief, the thick, humid air can still pose a challenge. Homes without air conditioning can be significantly hotter than outside temperatures. Several cooling centers are open across the region. In Westchester and Dutchess counties, most libraries and senior centers serve as cooling centers.
