Tacoma City Council Approves Funding For New Multicultural Child & Family Hope Center
The Tacoma City Council recently voted to authorize the execution of a financing arrangement with the Multicultural Child and Family Hope Center in the amount of $1.5 million budgeted from the Urban Development Action Grant Fund for the development and construction of a new facility at 2102 S. 23rd St. which will help the Hope Center consolidate operations, expand services, and increase capacity and efficiency in the delivery of services. The Hope Center is a non-profit human services and early learning center that has operated in Tacoma for more than 30 years. Its mission is to provide culturally relevant support services that educate, empower, and uplift Tacoma’s children, parents, and community.
New location, new date for Low Rider Block Party
Since its inception, the Low Rider Block Party presented every summer since 2021 by Nepantla Cultural Arts Gallery has been near the gallery in South Delridge, and it’s been in August. This year, it’s moving to White Center proper, and moving up to July. A reader just tipped us that the block party is this Saturday, July 20, 11 am-8 pm, on 17th SW between SW Roxbury and SW 100th. Hobby Lobby Closes 61,500 SQFT Store in Tacoma Central Shopping Mall
Arts and crafts retailer Hobby Lobby has closed its store in the Tacoma Central shopping center earlier this month. The 61,484-square-foot space, located at 3130 S. 23rd, appears to now be available for lease, according to a report from the Puget Sound Business Journal. The vacant building is owned by an entity affiliated with Pietromonaco Jackson Properties, a Mercer Island-based real estate company. The property is listed for lease at $16 per square foot, or $82,000 per month for the entire building. The property sits on a 5-acre site and includes parking.

Move over tiny houses; Seattle ranks number one as the city with the tiniest apartments in the U.S. According to a new report by apartment listing service RentCafe, the Emerald City leads the trend in diminishing apartment space, with an average size of 661 square feet. Portland is close behind, with new apartments measuring 685 square feet.
Potentially toxic bacteria found in South Kitsap's Horseshoe Lake
The Kitsap Public Health District is warning residents to avoid all contact with Horseshoe Lake until further notice due to potentially toxic bacteria in the water. In a statement Tuesday, the health district said cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, known to produce toxins is present in the South Kitsap lake. Contact with the toxin can make people sick and kill pets or other animals, the health district said. The health district is also asking residents to rinse boats and trailers thoroughly before going to another lake.
