BOSTON, Mass. — Hononegah graduate Paige Taborski made certain her first career start in goal for the 13th-ranked Northeastern Huskies was a memorable one.

The junior goaltender had 12 saves and recorded a 4-0 shutout against Merrimack in North Andover, Mass., on Jan. 26.

Taborski was back in goal the next game in a rematch with Merrimack and was the winning goalie in a 4-3 victory.

Overall, the 5-foot-7 Taborski has played in five games for the Huskies (20-9-1, 13-7-1), who have a seven-game winning streak in NCAA Division I. She has 26 saves and a 1.43 goals against average.

Taborski got her start in hockey playing in the Beloit Youth Hockey Association. She went on to play club hockey for the Madison Capitols and later the elite Chicago Mission, where she helped with the 2021 USA Hockey national championship.

    • DUO SHINE FOR WARHAWKS: Beloit Memorial grads Shelvin Garrett II and Kobe Chandler continue impressive indoor track seasons at UW-Whitewater, helping the Warhawks win the Big Dawg Invite hosted by UW-Stevens Point on Saturday.

The Warhawks rolled up 181 points to hold off the Pointers (166.5) for first in the meet.

Garrett, who has already topped career bests in the triple and long jump, won the 60-meter dash in 6.98 seconds. The ex-Purple Knight broke UW-W’s 10-year-old program record by over 2 inches in the triple jup with a leap of 15.41 meters (50-feet-6.75) and that still ranks as the best mark in NCAA Division III so far this season. His long jump of 7.15 meters (23-5.50) ranks 12th nationally.

Chandler, meanwhile, picked up a first place at Stevens Point in the 200 in 22.76.

•RICO HEATS UP: After missing the start of Morton College’s basketball season due to injury, freshman Rico Yarbrough (Beloit Memorial) has started to heat up. He had a career-high 21 points recently and the 6-6 sharpshooter has helped his team roll go 15-7 and 6-2 in conference.

Yarbrough has played 16 games with 11 starts. He has averaged 10.1 points and 5.1 rebounds, shooting 46.8 percent from the field.

Yarbrough, of course, finished last season strong for the Purple Knights, scoring a school-record 61 points in one game and adding pair of 48-point games.

GREAT DEBUT: Freshman Jayden Nortier (Clinton) has started 17 games and played in all 21 for Edgewood College (12-9, 11-1).

Nortier is averaging 13 points and 4.1 rebounds, converting 45.7 percent. She has hit 25 3-pointers.
