PREPS: Hononegah baseball squeaks by Rockford Boylan

ROCKFORD—The old saying goes “No pain, no gain.”

Well, the Hononegah baseball team certainly benefited from Drake Broege being the victim of a little bit of suffering on Thursday afternoon.

After Xavier Huber and Bryce Ewin both singled in the top of the fifth, Landen Seymour was intentionally walked. Broege stepped up with two outs and was smacked by a pitch, breaking a 1-all tie and scoring what proved to be the winning run in the Indians’ 2-1 win over Rockford Boylan.

The game was scheduled as a non-conference game.

Broege had put Hononegah on top in the first when his double to left scored Seymour. Austin Alonso, who paced Boylan with two hits, had tied it up for the Titans (2-2) with his RBI single in the fifth.

Nolan Mabie allowed just one unearned run in four innings in his start for the Indians (3-0-1). The sophomore struck out five and walked four. Easton Stewart pitched two innings and allowed three walks but no hits while Ian Blankenship threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Ewing led the Indians’ eight-hit attack with three hits while Seymour had two.

    • SOFTBALL: BELOIT MEMORIAL 7, EAST TROY 6 (10 innings): Rilynne Cleland had labored through 10 up-and-down innings in her varsity debut.

The freshman made it a memorable season opener for the Purple Knights with one big swing of the bat.

Cleland walked it off when her ground ball single to left field scored senior Allie Gustafson, who had doubled in Abigail Middleton earlier in the frame.

Cleland, who along with Middleton paced hosting Beloit (1-0) with two hits, allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking five from the mound.

An RBI groundout from Gustafson put the Knights up 1-0 in the first and senior Trinity Winfield’s two-run single made it 5-2 in the sixth before a three-run homer from East Troy (0-1) in the seventh forced extra innings.

    • ANTIOCH 14, HONONEGAH 1 (5 inn.): While the temperature wasn’t ever much above 40 degrees, the weather and four Hononegah pitchers couldn’t cool off the red-hot Antioch attack in theBarrington Spring Fling Tournament.

Antioch (5-0) bashed 17 hits in just five at-bats, including two home runs, showing why USA Today ranks the Sequoits No. 9 in the nation. Antioch, which finished second in the Illinois a year ago, is ranked No. 2 in Illinois behind Lemont.

Freshman Irelyn O’Brien started in the pitcher’s circle for Hononegah (1-1) and surrendered seven hits and seven runs (six earned) over one inning, walking two and striking out one. One of the hits was a three-run homer by Addison Webb.

She was followed in order by relievers Emma Tapia, Mackenzie Haas and Sam Nosbisch, who each notched an inning and 1-3 of work. Tapia allowed five hits and four runs (two earned), Haas allowed two hits and one earned run and Nosbisch allowed three hits and two earned runs.

Michigan State recruit Jacey Schuler of Antioch allowed three hits, including Natalie Kinney’s solo home run. She walked one and struck out 10.

    • PECATONICA 15, SOUTH BELOIT 5: The SoBos committed 10 errors and allowed 11 hits in a tough loss to the hosting Indians (2-3) on Thursday.

Zorah Martin, who went 2-for-4, started the game with a solo home run. But by the time Jasmine Fago had an RBI single in the fourth, South Beloit (1-2) was down 7-2.

Taylor Castor, who went 2-for-3, added an RBI triple in a three-run fifth but Pecatonica scored 11 unearned runs to run away with the win.
