FREEPORT, Ill.—It was just last season that the Hononegah baseball team was forced to share the conference title with Freeport after the two NIC-10 squads split their season series.

And while the Pretzels have taken a bit of a step back and sit in the middle of the pack this season, the Indians sure aren’t taking any chances.

Hononegah beat Freeport 8-3 on Wednesday to earn a series sweep after the Indians won 8-7 in extra innings against the Pretzels on Monday.

Evan Sayles smacked an RBI single as part of a three-run second inning and Jakob DeLeo brought home two on his single to center in the fifth.

After the Pretzels answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, DeLeo helped bring home a run when his bunt single forced an overthrow by the third baseman.

Sayles’ RBI groundout made it 8-3 as he and DeLeo finished with two of the Indians’ seven hits.

Nolan Mabie threw six innings and allowed just two earned runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Hononegah (13-5, 8-0 NIC-10) remains unbeaten in the conference and is tied for first with Boylan Catholic (12-6, 8-0). Freeport (13-8, 3-5) is in sixth.

    • SOUTH BELOIT 14, SCHAUMBURG CHRISTIAN 13: The SoBos scored 11 runs in the final two innings and fended off a vicious rally by the Conquerors to hold on for its second win of the season on Tuesday.

Richard Carlson finished 4-for-4, smacking solo homers in the first and seventh and a one-run double in the fourth. He also earned the save, staying steady after allowing a two-run homer before getting the final out as Schaumburg (2-11, 0-5 Northeastern Athletic Conference) scored seven runs in the final frame.

A seven-run sixth, highlighted by Zachary Baker’s two run double, helped South Beloit (2-11, 2-6) surge ahead and take a 10-6 lead.

JT Sanders finished with three hits while Jonah Martinez had a pair of hits and two RBI. Baker had three walks and a hit as the SoBos’ racked up 15 hits and 10 walks.

Baker earned the win as he allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out nine in six innings.

    • SOFTBALL: HONONEGAH 19, ROCKFORD BOYLAN 3: Sophomore Emma Tapia was 5-for-5 with a run scored and five RBIs and senior Danielle Franz was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs as the Indians improved to 8-0 in NIC-10 play.

Hononegah (14-1 overall) jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first inning, tacked on four in the second and seven in the fourth to end the game by the mercy rule.

Hononegah banged out 18 hits, including doubles by Aislynn Palmer, Natalie Kinney and winning pitcher Sam Nosbisch and two apiece by Tapia and Franz.

Nosbisch went two innings, allowing only one hit and an unearned run with four strikeouts. Tapia came on and pitched two innings, allowing three hits and two runs.

    • DAKOTA 12, SOUTH BELOIT 1: The Indians scored four runs in the third inning and six in the fifth to end the game via the mercy rule against the hosting SoBos in non-conference action on Wednesday.

Zorah Martin smacked a triple and scored on Whitney Schnack’s sacrifice fly in the first but it was all Dakota (13-1) after that.

Schnack took the loss for South Beloit (7-5) after allowing 12 runs, but just four earned, on nine hits and four walks. She struck out seven.
