ROCKTON — With the score tied up at one and an impressive duel well under way between Hononegah and Hampshire, it felt like the next team to find a way to plate a run would walk away the winner.
That proved to be true when the Whip-Purs’ Calen Scheider took the first pitch he saw in bottom of the fifth over the center-field fence for the go-ahead home run before Ari Fivelson followed it up with a solo homer to right field to act as insurance and help down the Indians 3-1 during Saturday’s IHSA 4A regional championship at Weber Field.
An RBI double by Anthony Krabowski put second-seeded Hampshire up 1-0 in the first inning.
One-out singles from Bryce Ewing and Landen Seymour put two on for the third-seeded Indians in the third. Evan Sayles moved the runners over with a bunt and Austin Dresser then grounded out to the second baseman to make it 1-1.
The Indians put two on with two outs in the sixth as Jakob DeLeo was hit by a pitch and Nicholas Santis singled but a strikeout kept the Whip-Purs in front. A 1-2-3 seventh ended Hononegah’s season.
Nolan Mabie started and went four innings for the Indians while allowing three earned runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts. DeLeo threw a pair of hitless innings with just two walks.
Calen Scheider was dominant in his start for the Whip-Purs as he allowed just one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out 10.
Hononegah finished its season with a 24-6-1 overall record.
