PREPS: Hononegah softball falls 7-3 to Barrington in sectional semifinals

BARRINGTON, Ill. — Hononegah outhit host Barrington, but all the offense the Indians could muster was a three-run home run by Danielle Franz in the first inning of Wednesday night’s IHSA 4A sectional semifinal.

The Fillies tied the game with three runs in the fourth and put up four in the fifth for a 7-3 victory. Kara Tarachewsky hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning off Hononegah pitcher Aislynn Palmer.

Palmer went the distance, allowing nine hits and the seven runs (four earned). She walked two and struck out eight.

The Indians (30-4) had 10 hits, but only two for extra bases and just stranded too many runners.

Franz, Palmer and Peyton Klikno each had two hits for Hononegah.

    • CLINTON 8, LOMIRA 4: In Lomira, the Cougars took advantage of a mighty sloppy fifth inning by the Lions to pour on five runs and advance to the WIAA Division 3 regional finals with their victory in a semifinal game that was continued on Wednesday after being postponed in the top of the second due to rain on Tuesday.

Tyler Moe was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring the first run across for sixth-seeded Clinton (14-7) in the first inning before Payton Whalen’s bunt was thrown away for an error to allow a second run.

An RBI double by Lomira cut the lead in half in the bottom half and a two-run single in the fourth put the Lions ahead 3-2.

But No. 3 Lomira committed three of its five errors in the fifth as Moe drew yet another bases-loaded walk, Whalen added an RBI single, Cooper Atkinson hit a two-run single and Logan Thill brought one home on his pop fly that was dropped by the third baseman.

An RBI single by Tim Arnold in the seventh upped Clinton’s lead to 8-3 before the Lions (18-5) added one in the bottom half.

Gavin Wesling had a double while Bryce Phillips added a single and scored a run as the Cougars were outhit 11-5 but drew six walks. Thill went all seven innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on 11 hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Clinton will travel to play at No. 2 Kenosha St. Joseph, who shutout Horicon 7-0, on Thursday.

    • NEW BERLIN EISENHOWER 11, BIG FOOT 1: In New Berlin, the Lions proved why they were seeded No. 1 as they run-ruled the No. 9 Chiefs in six innings in Wednesday’s WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal.

A one-run single from Evan Henningfield was all Big Foot could manage scoring wise as New Berlin (16-10) scored two runs in the second, four runs in the third and three runs in the sixth.

The Chiefs (8-15) racked up 10 hits but left nine runners on base as the Lions’ Cal Schneider worked around the hits to strike out five and allow just one walk in six innings.

Connor Weeks and Brady Wojcik each had two hits. Weeks also went five innings from the mound and allowed eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits and four walks with three strikeouts.
